Hope in Nepal

In the rugged valleys and hills of rural Nepal, life is shaped by distance, weather, and the quiet courage of ordinary people. For many children and families, simply getting to school, reaching a health post, or earning enough to eat is not a given; it is something strived for, day after day.

At First Steps Himalaya, we see this reality up close. We also see something else: a stubborn, enduring hope.

Hope in everyday places

Hope in Nepal does not always look dramatic. Often, it looks like:

  • A child walking an hour each way to school, uniform neat, bag slung over one shoulder, determined not to miss another day.

  • A mother attending a community education talk to learn more about nutrition, home safety, and protecting the environment.

  • A young teacher returning to their village after First Steps training, choosing to use new skills in the classroom.

  • Teachers and local leaders staying in remote areas because they believe the next generation deserves better.

These are not stories of rescue from the outside. They are stories of people taking first steps and then another, and another, towards a different future for their families.

Why hope matters

The challenges are real. In many Nepali communities:

  • Schools are often staffed by untrained teachers with little understanding of child friendly teaching methods.

  • Livelihoods depend on rain, soil, and markets that rise and fall beyond anyone's control.

  • When disaster strikes, landslides, floods, or earthquakes, the impact is magnified by isolation and poverty.

Hope here means seeing what is hard and still investing in what is possible. That is the kind of hope your support makes possible.

We do not promise quick fixes or miracle solutions. We commit to walking with communities over the long term, supporting changes that take years to take root: children staying in school, young people becoming more resilient, families building more secure lives.

What long‑term hope looks like in our work

Across our programmes, hope shows up in practical ways:

  • Education: Supporting children to access school, stay in class, and complete their exams, so they have real choices about their futures.

  • Community strength: Working with local groups so they can identify their own priorities, manage resources, and advocate for their rights.

  • Dignity and voice: Ensuring that women, girls, and marginalised groups are not left behind, but are active participants in their communities.

None of this happens overnight. Over time, these first steps add up. A child who completes secondary education is more likely to earn more, marry later, and have healthier children. A community that becomes more resilient and less dependent on outside help. A young woman who becomes a role model for those who come after her.

For example:

  • NZ$90 sends two teachers to a 5‑day residential training workshop.

  • NZ$320 provides menstrual hygiene training and reusable pads for 30 girls.

  • NZ$480 funds a workshop for 15 head teachers.

Why our Annual Appeal 2026 is about hope

Our Annual Appeal 2026 is built on this conviction: that hope is a practice. It is something we do, together, through steady, ongoing support.

This year, your support will help strengthen practical disaster readiness skills and support for teachers and communities so they can act more quickly and safely when minutes matter.

When you give to the Annual Appeal, you are not funding a single project or a short term fix. You are helping to sustain the long term relationships and programmes that make hope possible.

We do not take your generosity for granted. Every gift, however small, becomes part of a larger story of change in rural Nepal.

Please give today

A quiet invitation

If this vision of hope resonates with you, we invite you to consider a gift to the First Steps Himalaya Annual Appeal 2026.

You can find out more and give here: First Steps Himalaya Annual Appeal 2026

If now is not the right time to give, that is okay. You can still stand with Himalayan communities by:

  • Keeping these places and people in your thoughts

  • Sharing what you learn about life in the Himalayas with friends and family

  • Choosing to believe that long term, respectful partnership can make a real difference

P.S. Every gift today sustains teacher training, Safe Steps, community education and menstrual hygiene education in rural Nepal.

Still believing, together

In the end, hope in the Himalayas is not something we bring from the outside. It is already there, in the daily courage of children, parents, teachers and leaders.

Our role at First Steps Himalaya is to listen, to walk alongside, and to help create conditions where that hope can grow. Through our Annual Appeal 2026, we invite you to join us in that work, not with grand promises, but with a shared belief that every first step matters.
