At First Steps Himalaya, we believe that strong, informed communities are essential for children to thrive. In many rural areas of Nepal, however, there is very limited awareness about vital issues such as nutrition, home and child safety, and environmental protection. Our Community Education programmes address this gap by empowering parents and caregivers with practical knowledge and skills they can use every day.

Goal

To empower parents and caregivers in rural Nepal with the tools and knowledge to support healthy, safe, and sustainable communities.

Objectives

Our Community Education initiatives focus on:

  • Promoting parental engagement in children’s education

  • Raising awareness on health, nutrition, and home and child safety

  • Educating families about protecting and caring for their environment

We are at the early stages of this programme and have begun by delivering community talks at schools, raising awareness on key issues such as hygiene, nutrition, environmental health, and home safety. These sessions create a vital starting point for building knowledge and confidence among families and caregivers.

As the programme develops, our approach will expand to include:

  • Workshops and Training – Interactive sessions to build practical skills in nutrition, environmental care, and safe household practices.

  • Parent Engagement – Guidance and tools to help caregivers actively support their children’s learning and wellbeing.

  • Community Outreach – School- and ward-level initiatives that encourage cooperation, sustainability, and shared responsibility for children and the environment.

Impact So Far

Through these programmes, parents and caregivers gain essential awareness where it was often lacking before. Families adopt safer, healthier, and more sustainable practices; children benefit from greater support at home; and communities develop stronger collaboration around education, wellbeing, and environmental stewardship.
