In the village of Kadambas, a small rural community in Nepal, meaningful change is happening, led by the people who know their community best.
“We must have change. Why should working parents spend a large part of their salaries sending children to private schools in the Kathmandu Valley? Our children deserve to study here, in a good school, right here in our village.”
These words set the stage for action and the community didn’t wait for anyone else.
Taking Action: Resources, Refurbishment, and Training
At Shree Kalidevi School, the parents and teachers collected resources, refurbished early years classrooms, and organised in-house teacher training. Younger children are now learning in child-friendly classrooms that make early education engaging and fun, helping them develop a love for learning from the start.
Weekly visits from our teacher trainer continue to support and enhance teaching quality, yet the heart of the change comes from the local team. They don’t wait for instructions; they just get on with it, planning lessons, maintaining classrooms, and creating a welcoming environment for every child.
Empowering Older Girls
Change at Shree Kalidevi School goes beyond the classroom. Older girls have recently taken part in a menstrual hygiene and reusable pad workshop, gaining practical skills, confidence, and knowledge to stay in school comfortably. This initiative ensures that all children, regardless of age or gender, can thrive in an inclusive learning environment.
Local Leadership Matters
It’s especially meaningful that the school is in the home village of Director Durga Aran, whose insight and connection to Kadambas help bridge community leadership with educational expertise. In fact his uncle was the founder of the school. With his guidance, parents and teachers are empowered to make sustainable improvements that truly reflect their community’s needs.
A School They Can Be Proud Of
Shree Kalidevi School shows that lasting, meaningful change starts locally. With engaged parents, committed teachers, and strong community leadership, children no longer have to leave home or families pay high fees to access quality education.
Kadambas is proof that when communities believe in their children, they don’t wait for change — they make it happen.
